County Aims to Take Measures to Protect Personal Information Saved on Copiers

CLEARFIELD – On Tuesday the Clearfield County Commissioners discussed taking measures to delete information stored on the hard drives of leased copy machines.

The topic came up when Jodi Brennan, county planning director, came to the Clearfield County Commissioners with a new copier lease agreement. She indicated that her office’s old copy machine lease was expiring. County Solicitor Kim Kesner stated that copiers are mostly simple computers. As such, they have hard drives. He indicated that it would be in the county’s best interest to delete the hard drives of copiers before they were returned. This would keep personal information, such as social security numbers, from being passed along with other personal information to the next copier customer.

The commissioners directed Kesner to come up with an agreement that would allow the county’s tech personnel to delete information on the hard drives before they go back.
