Obituary Notice: Olga M. Cowan

Olga M. Cowan, age 98, of Sykes Street in Sykesville, PA died May 9, 2010 at the Jefferson Manor in Brookville, PA.

She was born on March 8, 1912 in Sykesville, PA.  She was the daughter of the late Wassil B. and Anna (Kamensky) Morris. 

On Jan. 20, 1934, she married John Cowan, Jr.  He preceded her in death in 1960.

She attended Sykesville Schools and the DuBois Business College.  She was employed by PennDOT at the Punxsutawney office for 16 years and retired from the position of Chief Clerk in 1979.  She also served as interim Postmaster for several years and was instrumental in having the present day Sykesville post office building constructed.  She was active in Democratic Party politics most of her adult life and was the Jefferson County representative to the State Committee for many years.  In 2008, she was named the first recipient of the newly instituted Chairman’s Award for outstanding service to the Jefferson County Democrat Committee.  She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Sykesville, PA, the National Association of Postmasters and had been active in the Heart Fund.  She spent her retired years traveling and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by a son, James G. Cowan of Sykesville, PA; two sisters, Marcella Gier of Harrisburg, PA and Evelyn Kosko of Erie, PA, three grandsons, John, Gregg and Kevin Cowan, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley “Toodles” Cowan, a sister, Margaret Buhite and two brothers, Paul Morris and John Morris.

Visitation will be held on May 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. from the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.

A Scriptural Wake Service will be held on May 11 at 3:30 p.m. from the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Sykesville on May 12 at 11 a.m. with Father Marc Solomon as celebrant.

Burial will be in Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Cemetery in Sykesville, PA.
