CLEARFIELD – May 9-15 is National Police Week and the Clearfield Borough Police and the Clearfield Fire Department are holding an open house to celebrate.
On May 8, the Clearfield Borough Police Department and the Clearfield Fire Department will open their doors to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Attending this special event will be officers and staff from the police department, fire department, members of Clearfield Borough Council, and code enforcement. McGruff the Crime Dog will be there to meet with children and refreshments will be available.
Clearfield Borough is enthusiastic about this event and encourages everyone to attend. It is their hope that the public will take time out of their busy schedules to attend this event and show their appreciation and support for those who protect the community and ensure their safety. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
National Police Week was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy and a joint resolution of Congress. National Police Week pays special tribute to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while providing for the safety and protection of others in their community.
This year, the names of 324 officers killed in the line of duty are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. These officers include 116 officers who were killed in 2009 plus 208 who died in previous years.
It is in accordance with this special event that the Clearfield Police Department will be honoring those officers by hosting the open house at 14 South Front St.
“The 116 officers killed in the line of duty last year was the lowest number of officer deaths in five decades. Still, for the families, loved ones, colleagues, and communities, these fallen heroes, the loss is devastating and the sorrow is profound,” said Craig W. Floyd, Chairman and CEO of the Memorial Fund. “National Police Week is a time for all Americans to send a strong message that the service and sacrifice of these heroes were not in vain – that these brave men and women will always be remembered by a grateful nation.”
