PGC Commends Clearfield Officials For 2009 Bear Rescue

CLEARFIELD – David Carlini of the Pennsylvania Game Commission,came to the Clearfield Borough Council meeting Thursday night to recognize several of Clearfield’s citizens for their role in rescuing a 500 pound bear.

In October 2009 there was a large bear stuck in a tree across from the Sons of Italy club in East End.  Responding to the call were Clearfield Fire Department, Clearfield Borough Fire Police the Clearfield County Sheriff’s Department, Clearfield Borough employees and Clearfield Borough Police Department assisted at the scene. Also assisting was WCO Mike Steingraber of Centre County.  It took them eight hours to get the bear down from the tree and tranquilized.

Carlini presented awards to Clearfield Borough Police Chief Jeff Rhone, Fire Chief Mike Mayersky on behalf of the fire department, and Jim Kling, a member of Clearfield Borough Council.  Todd Kling, former fire chief, was also recognized by Carlini.  Also receiving awards from the Clearfield Borough Police Department were Matt Mahlon and Vince McGinnis.  Rob Snyder and George Dehaven, from the Sheriff’s Department, and Mike Morris from the Lawrence Township Police Department also received awards for their role in the bear rescue.

“I thank you, and them, for your assistance.  It made a day that could have been worse really pretty easy,” stated Carlini.
