Obituary Notice: Abigail Cotter

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Abigail LaRue Pope Cotter, 87 of Brisbin went to be with the Lord on March 11 at Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clearfield.

She was born on April 25, 1922 in Brisbin, the daughter of late LeRoy & Jennie Mae (Roach) Pope.

On April 15, 1943 in Philipsburg, she married Daniel Patrick Cotter, who passed away June 2, 2004.

She is survived by sons John Cotter and his wife Dorothyof Brisbin and Robert Cotter and his wife Linda of Houtzdale; daughters Janet Meckes and her husband Victor of Altoona, Joyce Turvo and her husband Dan of Eastbrook and Sharon Boyle and her husband Richard of Castle Dale, UT; brothers Russell C. Pope of Dearborn, MI and Dr. Ronald L. “Lee” Pope and his wife Carolyn of Lewisburg; grandchildren Cammi Wisor, Jayne Albright, Melissa Bookman, Christopher Cotter, Brian R. Meckes, Sherri Meckes-Hoskins, Jonathan D. Meckes, Christian Beveridge, Mindy North, Megan Gage and Anne Boyle; step-grandchildren Renee Snow and Rachel Snow and 14 great-grandchildren & one step-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death byher parents, husband and an infant son.

She was a 1940 graduate of Houtzdale Woodward Brisbin High School and also attended Bible College in Ohio.

She was employed at Navasky’s, Sylvania and later cleaned homes.

She was a member of the Brisbin First Church of God, where she played the piano for many services, taught the Adult Women’s Sunday School class for 30 years and taught vacation Bible school for many years.

She was a past member of the Sanborn Grange.

She enjoyed gardening, playing piano, cooking, sewing, crocheting, writing poetry and reading, especially the Bible.  She was well known for her delicious homemade bread. She enjoyed relationships with her family and many friends of all ages. In her final days it was her goal to read through the Bible for the 3rd time. Her journey ended with the book of Zechariah.

Funeral Services will be held at the Brisbin First Church of God, 525 Swoope St. Brisbin on March 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Andrew Griffith officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Brisbin.  Friends will be received at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home, 200 David St. Houtzdale on March 14, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. and at the Brisbin First Church of God on March 15 from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at 11 a.m.
