Library Idea Could Have Kids Diving Into Books, Pool

DUBOIS – DuBois City Council is considering a request from the DuBois Public Library that will offer children a discounted rate to the swimming pool.

The national theme for the public library is “Make a Splash @ Your Library” and Chris Meier, the children’s librarian, proposed that participants who read at least 500 minutes each month of June and July receive a discounted rate at the public swimming pool.  The participant could receive a discount once during each month.  Meier feels that this could bring the pool a sizeable increase in funds because it would draw out families that may not normally utilize the pool but could with a discounted rate.

In a letter to council, Meier said, “kids who read faithfully this summer could enjoy our great city pool, the pool would have more revenue, and it may even impact our crime rate as these motivated kids read more and more.”

“Without a doubt it’s a great idea,” said council member Dianne Bernardo or the partnership.

Council member Jim Aughenbaugh recommended that the City Manager John “Herm” Suplizio meet with the librarian in order to figure out what the discounted rate would be before approval.  Suplizio said that he would meet with Meier in order to work something out.
