March 6 Clearfield-Jefferson ARC Notes

Disaster Services is the most important service provided by the American Red Cross.  If you have a house fire, the Red Cross will  provide disaster verified assistance for emergency shelter, clothing, food and more.  This service is provided by the funds donated by the community and volunteer Disaster Action Team Members.

The Clearfield-Jefferson Chapter of the American Red Cross would like to invite you to become a member of the Disaster Action Team or DAT for short. You will receive training to enable you to help your family, friends and neighbors in their time of need. When a disaster strikes, you will be the Red Cross representative bringing relief to meet the immediate needs of shelter, food and clothes to anyone involved.  All materials, (forms and paperwork), personal ID, Red Cross vest, auto ID, blankets, comfort kits (soap, wash cloth, tooth brush, tooth paste, shampoo, body lotion, deodorant etc.), stuffed animals for children and training will be provided free of charge to you. A DAT member is notified by phone as to the location of the disaster and the number of people involved and will respond as soon as possible to assist the clients with their immediate needs. This is one part of the DAT team work called Client Services.

The second job of a DAT Member is providing a canteen. When rescue workers are on the scene of a disaster for several hours, they need drinks and sometimes food. The Red Cross provides for these needs as well. Canteen locations are set up in several places (Uni-Mart, Sheetz, Subway etc.) and consist of drink containers and possibly food.  A DAT member will be called and told the location of the disaster and the location to pick up the canteen. They will go pick up the canteen and deliver it to the scene of the disaster. Once on scene, the DAT member checks with the person in charge and puts the canteen where the chief indicates it will be safe for workers to get to. New volunteers will be accompanied by an experienced volunteer until they are comfortable on their own.

With additional training, you can become eligible to go out on National Disaster assignments.

This is a brief job description of a DAT Member. The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization staffed by 95% volunteers. We need people like you to help deliver these services in all areas of our jurisdiction.  If this is something you think you would be interested in helping with, call the Red Cross offices.  Training can be provided at a location in your area.
