DUBOIS – The Federal Fiscal Year 2010 Community Development Block Grant Program was discussed at Monday night’s Sandy Township supervisor’s meeting.
Eugene Zanella explained that the CDBG program is meant to assist communities in addressing the needs of low to moderate income residents. It also helps communities focus on and address housing and public facility issues in such a way that it can revitalize and expand, which would result in development and expansion of job opportunities.
CDBG can be used for several different purposes. In years past, Sandy Township has used CDBG funds to eliminate slums and blight, sanitary sewer projects, contributing to the purchase of a van for veterans, and waterline projects. In 2009, the township received $184, 592. It is estimated they will receive $185, 000 for 2010.
For the fiscal year 2010 funds, Sandy Township intends to use the grant money on the following:
-18 percent ($33, 226) will be used on program administration.
-30 percent ($45, 400) to eliminate slums and blight.
-$50, 000 toward the continued efforts to provide water and sewer service to eligible areas in the township, including the Adrian Furnace Water Project.
-$56, 000 toward the balance of construction funding to the Merris Avenue water project pending income survey results.
The figures are estimations and cannot be announced due to not having the actual CDBG figures. A second hearing will be held on April 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandy Township Municipal Building. The projects will be reviewed and selected.
The supervisors will meet and sign the application on May 3 at 7:00 p.m.
