PHILIPSBURG – State police in Philipsburg are warning residents of an identity theft/phone scam that is circulating through the Philipsburg area.
According to police unidentified criminal elements have been contacting unsuspecting residents in the Philipsburg area and soliciting personal information from them.
Police said once you have released your personal information these criminal can deplete your financial accounts and use your information for criminal activity within minutes.
The state police recommend that citizens not release any biographical or financial information to unidentified callers. Unless you are sure that the caller is legitimate, police ask that you not give them your information.
If you suspect that you have been the victim of a phone scam contact your financial institution immediately and advise them to freeze or close your compromised account. You should also contact your local police department if you have suffered financial or identity loss as a result of the phone scam.
