LT Super Expresses Concern Over Water Quality and Gas Well Drilling

CLEARFIELD – On Tuesday Lawrence Township Supervisor Glenn Johnston raised questions concerning water quality safety and Marcellus Shale gas well drilling at the supervisors’ meeting.

Johnston voiced concern that an unscrupulous gas well driller may dump frac water onto the soil or into streams.

“We have high-quality water and streams in Pennsylvania,” said Johnston.

He added that he was unsure what precautions the Department of Environmental Protection takes to ensure water quality near well sites. He asked whether there was anything the township could do to help ensure water quality.

Solicitor James Naddeo said the township could not take on the duties of DEP.

Johnston then directed Code Enforcement Officer Zach Lawhead to contact DEP to see what steps they take to ensure water quality.
