CBPD Offers Winter Travel Tips

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Borough Police Department has offered winter travel preparation tips due to the recent severe weather conditions.

In a press release, police suggested that residents:

*check their tires. They said residents should ensure they have sufficient tread on both back and front tires.

They said it is not only important to maneuver the vehicle, but it is equally so to have enough traction.

*check their windshield fluid reservoir and make sure it is full of deicing fluid.

Police said residents should also ensure their wipers function properly. They said they should also ensure the wipers have sufficient rubber material, which allows moisture to be removed from the windshield.

*maintain at least a half tank of fuel at all times. Police noted by adding dry gas or another fuel additive, residents ensure the vehicle operates properly.

*remove ice and snow as much as possible.

Police said it is a law violation to permit snow and ice to “blow” off a vehicle while traveling on a roadway. They said it is a safety issue as clumps of snow and ice could strike another vehicle.

*keep all vehicle lights and windows clear of both snow and ice. Police said headlights should always be on during travel. They said it allows other motorists to better see the vehicle.

Police also stressed that many roadways remain slippery from snow, ice and other winter roadway material.

As a result, they said motorists should refrain from cell phone usage, drinking beverages and other distractions.

Police said that these distractions slow reaction time in the event their vehicle loses traction.

Police said motorists should maintain adequate distance from the vehicles ahead. They said it allows for a safe stopping distance.

Police also noted that residents should not allow their vehicle to run unattended. They said it is a law violation and “provides temptation” for someone to steal the vehicle.

They said if residents park in a garage, they should make sure they have adequate ventilation for exhaust fumes to escape.
