Curwensville Wrestlers Edged by Brockway 30-28

BROCKWAY – It wasn’t a good opening night for the Curwensville high school wrestling team, but it was for the Rovers of Brockway who came away with a hard fought 30-28 victory.

The match Tuesday night at Brockway high school came down to the 135 pound weight class between two tough senior wrestlers in Brett Sutika of the Golden Tide and Ian Grecco of the Rovers. The winner would clinch the match for their respective squad.

Greeco picked up a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second while Sutika pulled out an escape in each frame. With a 4-2 winning margin going into the third period Grecco rode out the Tide senior to pick up the 4-2 victory to secure the win for the Rovers, their first of the year.

Curwensville would receive two forfeits in the final two weights, 140 and 145, to come up two points short in their first dual meet of the 2009-10 season.

Brockway went on a 27-0 run to start the night before the Tide put points on the board with Jordan Russell, at 103 for Curwensville, winning by forfeit.

There were no bouts at 112 and 119 which then brought on Derek Brothers at 125 for the Golden Tide.

The solid senior pushed his season record to 5-1 with a fall over Troy Hidinger in 2:51 after building a 6-1 margin. With the victory Brothers now has 104 victories in his stellar career. He is just 19 short of becoming the all-time win leader for the Tide.

Freshman Hunter McCracken of Curwensville, at 130, had to win to keep the Golden Tide comeback rolling and keep his squad in the hunt for a win.

The Tide youngster didn’t disappoint the Curwensville faithful who traveled to Brockway as McCracken hammered out a major decision, 11-3, over D. J. Forrest of Brockway.

It was now 27-16 in favor of the Rovers but the Tide had those 12 points coming in the final two bouts due to forfeits. So in actuality it was 28-27 Curwensville with the Sutika-Grecco match, at 135, yet to come to determine the final outcome.

The pair of 135 grapplers didn’t disappoint the crowd. It just happened to be Grecco’s night.

Brockway evens its record to 1-1 with the Tide starting at 0-1 and their next dual meet scheduled for January 5 at the Johnsonburg Rams.

The Rams handed the Rovers a 42-27 loss last week.

The Golden Tide junior high was victorious as they thumped the Brockway underclassmen 51-17.
