PHILIPSBURG – The Philipsburg-based State Police warn motorists that cold weather is approaching, resulting in the need for extra caution.
Police said that motorists should be observant for freezing conditions when crossing bridges and traveling on roadways in higher elevations. They also issued the following tips:
– Drive at the posted speed limit or slower where hazards dictate.
– Clear the vehicle’s windshield as well as other windows of frost, snow or any other obstruction.
– Make sure all lighting, including emergency flashers, are in working condition.
– Make sure the vehicle’s tires are in good condition and properly inflated.
– Maintain between one-quarter and one-half tank of fuel in your vehicle.
Police also urged motorists to store specific items in their vehicle during the winter season. They suggested the following: blankets, snacks, water, flashlights, small shovel, jumper cables, chain or tow strap and a first aid kit.
“Using these particulars as well as good common sense will greatly reduce vehicle crashes and other tragedies along the Commonwealth’s highway,” police said.
