CIU 10 Initiates Rumor Control Central for H1N1, Schools

WEST DECATUR – The Central Intermediate Unit # 10 has established Rumor Control Central. Rumor Control Central is a H1N1 rumor investigation service for its 12-school district customers. At a district’s request the Rumor Control Central will investigate a rumor that could affect the school environment. The CIU # 10 will provide a Fact Report to school officials following the investigation. By acting for a school district, CIU # 10’s Rumor Control Central serves as an independent investigator and can relieve school personnel of the time consuming task of investigating a rumor.

Rumor Control Central is a free service conceived Oct. 14 at the monthly meeting of the superintendents whose school districts are served by the Central Intermediate Unit # 10.

In addition to the rumor control service, the CIU # 10 has published on its Web site school district H1N1 Management Guidelines designed to assist school district administrators in the prevention and management of influenza-like illnesses in the school environment. The Guidelines are designed to assist school officials in minimizing the effects of influenza-like illnesses at school and to emphasize that school officials, parents and communities must work together to achieve an effective H1N1 school management system.

A school district’s use of the Rumor Control Central service is elective.

The CIU # 10 is one of Pennsylvania’s 29 intermediate units providing educational services to schools.
