PSP Philipsburg Urges Public to be Wary of Sweepstake Scams

PHILIPSBURG – Beware of any unexpected announcements that you have won a large sum of money warns the Philipsburg State Police.

The state police in Philipsburg warned in a press release that there are scams going around where a person receives an unsolicited announcement claiming the person has won a large sum of money from a contest the person didn’t enter in the first place.

There are two ways the scam works. One has the scammer asking you to send in the taxes for the money you have won first before they send you the non-existent winnings. The second method they do send you a check, but the check is fraudulent. By cashing the check you would then responsible for paying the bank for the full amount of the check you just cashed.

“Remember the old saying, ‘If it sounds too good to be [true], it probably is’,” warned state police.
