Fatal Accident Claims Brockway Man’s Life

BROCKWAY – A two-vehicle accident claimed the life of an 18-year-old Brockway man Sunday afternoon in Snyder Township, Jefferson County, the DuBois-based State Police reported.

Police said that Shane Edward Horner, 18 of Brockway, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Coroner Bernard Snyder.

Police also indicated that James Aldcroft, 72, who operated the second involved vehicle and his passenger Patricia Aldcroft, 66, both of Ontario, Canada, were airlifted to the Altoona Hospital. They noted that (James) Aldcroft was then flown to the Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

According to the police report, the Horner vehicle was traveling northbound on state Route 219, when it entered onto the east berm of the same for unknown reasons. His vehicle traveled approximately 193 feet north along the berm and a short distance through a yard.

Police said Horner apparently overcorrected to the left and traveled in a northwest direction. He then crossed into the southbound lane of SR 219 and into the path of the Aldcroft vehicle. Horner’s left front struck the left front of the Aldcroft vehicle.

Police said that after impact, the Horner vehicle ceased movement. They said that the Aldcroft vehicle rotated approximately 90 degrees in a counterclockwise manner. The Aldcroft vehicle then traveled approximately 10 feet and came to a final rest facing east along the west berm.

Police stated that Donald Layzell, 70, and Gail Layzell, 67, both of Ontario, Canada, sustained moderate injury as a result of the accident. They were treated at the DuBois Regional Medical Center – West. Both were occupants in the Aldcroft vehicle.

Police stated that seatbelts were in use by occupants in both vehicles. They indicated that both vehicles sustained severe damage.

Police were assisted at the scene by Brockway Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance, Dusan Ambulance, Falls Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Life Flight and Jefferson County Coroner.
