Hummingbird Speedway Results – 8/01/09

Reynoldsville, PA — After heavy rains on Friday, Mother Nature provided excellent weather for Saturday Racing at Hummingbird Speedway this past weekend. It was a night of repeat winners as Luke Hoffner of Turbotville, Bob Connor of DuBois, Don Henry of Brockway, Matt Heindl of St. Marys, and Aaron Luzier of Clearfield all visited Victory Lane.

The Four Cylinders were first to bring their feature trackside, led by Randy Albert and Tim Bailey on the front row. Third starter Don Henry took the early lead and, following several early cautions, began to pull away as cars ran two-wide behind him. At the halfway point, it was Don Henry, Mike Anderson, Adam Nixon, Paul Metz Jr., and Aaron Henry. Anderson and Nixon began closing the gap with 5 laps to go, when a multi-car pileup behind them involved Bill Washek, Randy Albert, George Bailey, and Metz. On the restart, D Henry was able to hold off Anderson and take his fourth win of the season. Following D Henry and Anderson across the line were Nixon, A Henry, and Tim Bailey.

Next up were the Street Stocks, with Scott Winslow and Bob Rosman on the front row. Rosman led the early laps, and was chased by Orin Taylor. Following several early cautions, the top two stayed that way, with Bob Connor and Jamie Price battling side-by-side for the third spot. At the halfway point, Rosman continued to lead, and he got some breathing room as Taylor and Connor contested the second position. Connor was able to get by Taylor for second, and made a last lap pass on Rosman for the win, his fifth of the season. Behind Connor and Rosman were Price, Steve Cook, and Brandon Connor.

Bob McMillen and newcomer Tim Fedder brought the Limited Late Models to the green flag to begin their feature. McMillen took first, followed by Fedder, with Chris Farrell closing. The top two made contact on lap four and brought out a caution, relegating them to the rear of the field and handing the lead over to Farrell. A caution on lap four for a spin by Paul Kot, who also collected Bill Krause, bunched up the field and put Ed Connor on Farrell\’s tail. But Farrell was able to hold Connor off on the restart. After several more minor cautions before the halfway point, Farrell and Connor were able to maintain the top two spots, followed by Cody Schultz, Derek Rodkey, and Luke Hoffner. Farrell opened up a good sized lead as Connor and Schultz battled side-by-side for second and Hoffner tried to get by Rodkey for fourth. Hoffner was able to work his way to second using the high line and, with two laps to go, a caution for Bill Davis gave him one final shot at Farrell. He looked low on the restart but was able to go high around Farrell on the last lap to take the win. Connor finished third, with Schultz and Rodkey rounding out the top five.

The Pure Stock feature began with Nathan Yeaney and Zach Gustafson on the front row. Yeaney grabbed the early lead, as the yellow flag flew for Matt Heindl and Todd English who had made contact further back in the field. A lap four incident slowed the pace as Kyle Shannon spun in turn one and was hit in the rear by Steven Cook, who went underneath Shannon\’s car. After several more cautions, the event reached the halfway mark with the running order being Yeaney, Bob Alcorn, Gustafson, Jerry Walls, and Matt Heindl, who had worked his way back up front. A five-car battle for second ensued, with Walls coming out on top and then challenging Yeaney for the lead until a flat tire sent him to the pits. Heindl was able to get by Yeaney and take his third win of the season. Bruce Hartzfeld, Justin Kanouff, and Ryan Jones ran third through fifth.

Aaron Luzier and Mike Lucas brought the Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders to starter Bob Sullinger\’s green flag. Jason Joiner jumped out from his third starting spot to take the lead, but that was short lived as Luzier was able to get by him on lap two. He held the lead through the mid point of the race, and was chased by Lucas and Bryan Warren. At the halfway mark it was Luzier, Lucas, Warren, Josh Frantz, and Shawn Fedder. In the late stages, Luzier held on for his second win of the year. Lucas took the runner-up spot, followed by Warren, Fedder, and Frantz.

Pit Notes: 102 cars were entered for competition, with 20 Limited Late Models, 21 Street Stocks, 13 Four Cylinders, 25 Pure Stocks, and 23 Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders. Next week fans will be treated to another five division program, with trophies being presented by Pennsylvania Racing Outreach.
