August will soon be here, bringing the sound of school bells across the area with the start of the new academic year. But have you given consideration about steps to protect your children and students from sexual abuse?
PASSAGES, Inc., the non-profit sexual assault center that serves Clarion, Clearfield and Jefferson counties, provides informational programs to children in the area schools, community groups and churches. These programs focus on children’s steps to prevent themselves from becoming victims of sexual abuse, according to a press release issued by the center.
It also stated that the information is presented in an age-appropriate manner and is “by no means sexually explicit.” Instead, children who are in the elementary grades learn the difference between “safe and unsafe touches” and a touching rule. At the program’s conclusion, the children will also learn three steps to take if they are the victim of an unsafe touch.
Children who are middle school-aged students can benefit from two different programs, according to the press release. It stated that these grade topics will include peer sexual harassment and chatting with danger – Internet safety.
“These programs take a look at two very important topics – bullying and staying safe online,” stated the press release, noting that they are among the most requested programs.
For high school students, PASSAGES, Inc. offers programs on a variety of topics, such as date rape, drug facilitated sexual assault, dating 101, as well as a version of chatting with danger that is targeted for older students. The press released stated that nearly all programs have an adult component that equips parents with information.
All PASSAGES, Inc. programs are presented at no charge. Donations, however, are accepted. Any school, community group or organization that is interested in scheduling a program should contact the Prevention Education Staff at 1-800-793-3620, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
