CLEARFIELD – The Bradford Legion baseball team ended Clearfield\’s four-year reign as champion of the Clearfield Independence Day Tournament by sweeping the Clearfield Babe Ruth League All-Stars 12-0 in six innings and the Chiefs 15-9 Saturday and then defeating the Curwensville Teener League 15-16 All-Stars 16-4 Sunday at the Lawrence Township Rec Park Field.
Manager Sid Lansberry\’s Chiefs finished 2-1 in the fifth annual tourney by tripping the Fox Township Legion 11-7 and the Clearfield BRL All-Stars 14-6 Sunday.
In the other game, the Clearfield BRL All-Stars lost 16-3 in five innings Saturday to Fox Township, which had to opt out of its final game Sunday because of an Elk County League playoff.
The Curwensville Teeners were invited to fill Fox Township\’s spot against Bradford, which was undefeated in the Elk County League regular season.
The champions overcame 4-2 and 8-4 deficits against the Clearfield Legion in the pivotal game.
They drew even with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Mike Pascarella and a two-run single by Pat Pascarella.
An inning later, they broke the tie with another four-spot on four consecutive bases loaded walks by relievers Derek Danver and Aaron Sayers.
Both teams had 19 hits, with Lou Jones collecting four and Pat Pascarella, Cory Viola and Chris Krajewski ripping three apiece for Bradford. Krajewski drove in five runs.
Andrew Redden singled four times for the Chiefs, who got a double and two singles from Kyle Timchak and pairs of hits from Justin Hoffman, Corey Bookhamer, Sayers and Chad Zurat. Bookhamer and Zurat each had an extra base blow and two RBIs.
Drew Kelly pitched into the sixth inning to notch the win despite surrendering 17 hits.
Pat O\’Hara hurled a three-hitter and struck out three in Bradford\’s shutout against the Clearfield BRL All-Stars.
The Pascarella brothers, Viola and Kevin Pautler each had two safeties. Viola and Pautler had two RBIs apiece.
The Clearfield Legion had to hold off Fox Township after grabbing a 9-0 lead through three innings.
Sayers drove in five runs with a single, a double, a bases-loaded walk and a groundout.
Bookhamer belted a pair of doubles, and Hoffman chipped in two singles. Bookhamer and Derek Danver each scored three runs.
Timchak held Fox Township in check through six innings for his first win for the Chiefs but was relieved by Trevor Flanagan after giving up three hits in a row in the seventh. An error gave the visitors another runner, but Flanagan quelled the rally via two sacrifice flies and a groundout. He gave up one hit and one unearned run.
Jon Petrocchi stroked three singles, Josh Schlimm pounded two doubles and Jess Cogan drove in three runs for Fox Township.
In the annual finale between the two Clearfield teams, the Chiefs trailed three times before putting away the BRL All-Stars.
The snapped a 6-6 deadlock in the lower fourth on Hoffman\’s single, Timchak\’s sacrifice bunt an Bookhamer\’s fly ball.
Luke Peterson\’s two-run double keyed a four-run outburst in the fifth, and a groundout by Zurat and hits by Shane Harper and Peterson were good for RBIs in the sixth.
Harper had three of the Chiefs\’ 17 hits off five BRL All-Star hurlers and drove in two runs. Troy Danver had two hits and three RBIs. Zurat, Sayers and Hoffman each had a single and a double, and Derek Danver added two singles.
Tyler Jacobson chalked up his first legion win in relief of Sayers, limiting the BRL All-Stars to three hits and one run over three innings. Bookhamer closed it out with two scoreless frames, allowing one hit.
Jarrett Fulmer and Seth Hainsey matches pairs of hits for the BRL All-Stars. Fulmer, Justyn Knepp and Derrick Snyder doubled.
Tim Pyne starred for Fox Township against the BRL All-Stars, pitching a six-hitter with six strikeouts and blasting two home runs and a single for five RBIs.
His grand slam home run was the highlight of an 11-run outburst against three of the five pitchers who worked for the BRL All-Stars.
Josh Schlimm singled in two runs in that first and then ended the game with a two-run walk-off homer.
Ryan Uhl and Derek Meyer also clubbed home runs and had two hits apiece. Uhl added three RBIs.
Robert Lombardo singled twice for the BRL All-Stars.
