JAY TOWNSHIP – A single vehicle accident claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in Jay Township, Elk County, the Ridgway State Police reported.
According to the police report, the boy’s vehicle was traveling south on state Route 255 at approximately 100 feet north of Grant Street. His vehicle left the west side of the roadway and struck an entrance to a private driveway with its undercarriage.
Police said that the vehicle continued south along the west bank, where it then impacted a tree. At that time, police indicated the vehicle began to overturn.
Police said that the vehicle continued south before striking a utility pole. The vehicle continued to overturn, became airborne and struck the roadway at Grant Street. The vehicle then struck a guiderail on the south side of the aforementioned street.
Police said that the vehicle continued south, reentering SR 255. They indicated that the boy was ejected from the vehicle, which continued in a southeast direction before coming to a rest on the east berm. The vehicle then became consumed by flames.
Police indicated that the boy was pronounced dead at the scene by the Elk County Coroner.
Police were assisted at the scene by the Jay Township Fire Department, Penfield Fire Department, Fox Township Fire Department, Bennetts Valley Ambulance, St. Marys Ambulance and PennDOT.
