Local Receives First ‘Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Nutrition’

CLEARFIELD – Sue Kordish, director of planning and program operations for the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, Inc., was recognized by John Michael Hall, Pennsylvania Department of Aging secretary, at the 2009 Nutrition Services Conference. She was presented with the first Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Nutrition for Older Pennsylvanians.

The award recognizes an individual that has demonstrated a commitment to improve the quality of health and life of older Pennsylvanians through the Adult Nutrition Program. Meals are provided locally through the county’s Centers for Active Living and community centers and also through the Agency’s Meals on Wheels and More program.

Kordish was selected because of her 30 years of service to the aging network and her commitment to helping older adults live independently through the aid of home-delivered meals. She also partnered with Penn State University students to plan a meal production and distribution facility which now prepares more than 500 meals per day.

Hall stated, “Sue has made a noteworthy contribution to providing older adults with nutritious meals on which they rely for their good health. The work done is invaluable in assuring that older citizens receive tasty meals on a regular basis at home and at local senior centers.”

In Clearfield County, the Meals on Wheels and More program serves nearly 170,000 meals to more than 1,000 consumers per year. Approximately 525 meals are delivered every day! In addition, another 40,000 meals per year are served at various senior centers in the county.
