Lady Tide Climb to 16-0, Upends Kane 13-0

KANE – The Curwensville high school girls softball team started the last week of the regular season on the right foot Monday afternoon when they beat up on the Lady Wolves of Kane 13-0.

The Lady Tide banged out seven doubles on the northern road trip in the rout of Kane that lasted five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule being invoked.

Allen Leigey, Curwensville head coach said later, “I have been head coach now for eight years and that’s the most doubles we have had in any one game. We just seemed to find the gaps that led to all the extra base hits.”

Holly Lansberry of the Lady Tide had her sites set on another no-hitter, but that was broken up by a lead off single in the bottom of the fifth by Kane first baseman Kalie Walter.

The one-hitter gives Lansberry and Curwensville identical 16-0 records for the 2009 campaign. Lansberry, who struck out nine Kane batters, still has a perfect ERA of 0.00 with 178 K’s on the year in 82 innings of work from the circle. The Tide pitcher has a career total of 760 strikeouts and is in reach of the magic number of 800.

The District 9 Northern Allegany Small School Division Southern Tier win has the Lady Tide all alone in first place at 12-0 with Kane dropping to 7-6 in league play.

Shannon McDonald and Ashley Demchak paced the Tide on offense. McDonald stroked two doubles while Demchak went three for three driving in three runs with one double.

Also banging out doubles was Lansberry, Tess Bloom, Stacey Johnson and Jenae Stiles. Freshman Molly Demchak had a two run single in the fifth to help the Tide reach the 10-run rule.

The Lady Tide will face perhaps their toughest test of the 2009 campaign on Tuesday night when they travel to Punxsutawney to face the Lady Chucks. Punxsutawney lost it’s first game of the season on Friday night to DuBois, 3-2 in extra innings. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Leigey talked about the upcoming night game in Punxsutawney, “This will be the second big test for us this year. The first big test was when we played Clearfield and won 5-0.”
