DCC Returns Favor, Tops Curwensville 5-3

DUBOIS – The Curwensville Golden Tide baseball team traveled once again to DuBois on Wednesday to clash with the Cardinals of DuBois Central Catholic (DCC).

In a game that was moved to DuBois due to poor field conditions at Curwensville, the Cardinals evened the score with the Tide in winning 5-3 by scoring three in the top of the seventh. The day before the Tide came out on top 8-4.

It was a tough loss for Tide pitcher Sam Gardner, who pitched well, as head coach Ryan Briskar of Curwensville mentioned, “Sam threw a good game and could have easily come out on top.”

Gardner went six and two-third innings before getting into some trouble in the top of the seventh. The Tide junior hurler had given up a lead off home run in the first to Cardinal Kyle Mann and then a two out homer to Ben Miknis in the sixth.

The Tide took a 2-1 lead after three innings with singles from Wes McGarry and Cory Bloom along with a couple of errors by the Cardinals.

Curwensville would up their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth on singles by McGarry and Gardner but they continued to leave runners on base as Briskar noted, “We had some base running problems today and just left too many runners on base.”

As mentioned, the Cardinals would push three runs across in the top of the seventh to beat the Tide and stop Curwensville’s three game winning streak. The Golden Tide are 9-4 overall and with the loss in the District 9 Northern Allegany Small School Division Southern Tier fall to 5-4.

McGarry paced the Tide offense with the two singles and it was Miknis and John Ferraraccio with two hits apiece leading the way for DCC.

Briskar put the loss in perspective, “We only had five hits today which was a big difference from the day before. We didn’t play the kind of game we usually do and today DCC capitalized on our mistakes.”

The Golden Tide are off until Saturday when they play at Brockway at 3:00 pm. The Tide beat the Rovers in their first game of the season, 15-9.
