Clearfield\’s Janocko on Winning Squad in Clarion Co. YMCA \"Sportsmanship I\" All-star Game

CLARION – Abby Grumley of Johnsonburg scored 13 points while hauling down 24 rebounds to win Most Valuable Player honors while leading the Red-South squad to a 76-73 win over the Black-North team in the ninth annual Clarion County YMCA “Sportsmanship I” Girls’ All-Star basketball game Saturday at Clarion High School.

For Grumley, it was her second all-star game MVP award in as many weeks. She was also the MVP of the 10th annual Alice R. Kozel District 9 All-Star game March 28.

The South, which led 32-26 at halftime and 46-33 early in the second half, was trailing 67-62 with about five minutes to play following a 34-16 run by the North. But 3-pointers by Ashley Campbell (Karns City) and Annie Janocko (Clearfield) got the South back to within one, 69-68, with just under four minutes to play.

The North, though, got the lead back to three, 71-68, on a Bree Bergman (Kane) basket with 3:40 to play before the South answered with a 6-0 run to take the lead for good.

Kim Goth (Redbank Valley) made cut the deficit to 71-70 on a basket with 3:02 left, and Janocko gave the South the lead for good when she scored off a Grumley pass with 2:30 to play. Two free throws by Campbell then made it a 3-point South lead, 74-71, with 1:38 left before Maggie O’Neil (Cranberry cut the deficit to one, 74-73, with 1:11 to play. Goth, though, who had missed two free throws with 2:02 to play, restored the lead to three, 76-73, when she hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 18.2 seconds left. The North then turned the ball over on its final possession ending the game.

Campbell, who was the 32 Shooting Award winner at halftime of the game, added 14 points and nine rebounds for the South, while Goth, who won the coveted Sportsmanship Award, added 12 points and five rebounds.

Bergman (16 points and six rebounds) along with Rocky Grove’s Megan Peterson (16 points, nine rebounds) led the North with O’Neil adding 12 points and seven rebounds and Bre Grimone (Elk County Catholic) chipping a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

NOTES – Former Pittsburgh Steeler great Jerome Bettis was named the Clarion County YMCA “Sportsman of the Year”. Past recipients of the award include John Joy, Arnold Palmer, Don Stemmerich, Joe Paterno, Richard (Dick) Pae, Jodi Gault and David “Red” Bevevino.
