STATE COLLEGE – The Clearfield Bison baseball team drew a tough assignment for their Central Penn League opener Tuesday.
They had to face State College ace Matt Godwin, who has committed to play for perennial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contender California after getting some interest from NCAA Division I schools.
Clearfield solved the senior left-hander for five hits and two runs, both unearned, in five innings, but the Little Lions made him a winner by snapping a 2-2 tie with five runs in the fourth en route to a 10-4 victory at Community Field.
Aaron Sayers had two hits and scored three runs while Isaac Butler drove in three runs with a single and two forceouts for the Bisons, who tagged reliever Brad Holzwarth for two runs in the sixth.
Sayers scored both of Clearfield\’s runs off Godwin.
He singled and was at third base when Butler bounced into a forceout in the second inning and reaching base on an error and came around Butler\’s hit in the fourth to offset Little Lion Scott Glass\’ two-run triple in the second.
Three walks got loser Michael Moyer in trouble in lower fourth. A wild pitch and a Bison miscue gave the Little Lions two runs before Jose Texidor and Jeff Moyer singled for RBIs.
Corey Bookhamer came on to get the final two outs but gave up a two-run single by Will Pryor in the fifth and another run in the sixth.
In the top of the sixth, singles Derek Danver, Sayers and Bookhamer produced one run. Butler then notched his third RBI on a forceout.
The Bisons (1-1) will make their District 9 League debut at DuBois Monday in a game that also will count in the CPL.
Clearfield\’s junior varsity lost 17-7.
