PSP Reminds Residents of Upcoming Census Canvas

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Cpt. Kimberly A. Leemhuis, commanding officer, Pennsylvania state police, Troop C, Punxsutawney, would like residents to be aware of the possibility of individuals canvassing neighborhoods in preparation for the 2010 United States Census.

Census Bureau personnel will be conducting address confirmations from April to July 2009 to ensure the address list for the Census is as accurate as possible. Address involves Census Bureau personnel canvassing neighborhoods to update the Bureau’s address list and maps using hand-held computers.

During this massive operation about 140,000 Census employees will conduct address canvassing in neighborhoods across the United States. Residents may see these people performing their work in neighborhoods but the canvassers will not be approaching or entering residences for the purpose of interacting with residents. Census Bureau personnel will have identification if approached and will display it upon request.

If any suspicious behavior is observed it should be reported to your local law enforcement agency for investigation.
