CLARION – Clarion University’s Students for Life (SFL) organization won a national award for its community outreach efforts at the Annual Students for Life of America National Conference, held at the Catholic University of America on Jan. 24.
Out of 480 organizations, Clarion won one of only three awards granted, in the category of Community Outreach. The award included a $500 prize.
Founded in 2004, SFL has been very active on and off campus in promoting awareness of life issues as well drawing attention to the plight of pregnant and parenting students.
Thirteen Clarion students were among the 800 conference participants, including:
President Gina Fazenbaker, a senior art major, a daughter of David and Lynn Fazenbaker of Addison and a graduate of Turkeyfoot Valley High School.
Vice-President Steve McNulty, a senior history major, a son of Michael McNulty of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Seton LaSalle High School.
Katy Nolan, a sophomore elementary education/special education major, a daughter of Cathy and Joe Nolan of Mars and a graduate of Shaler High School.
Amber Thompson, a graduate student seeking a degree in speech language pathology, a daughter of Susan Schuchert of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Montour High School.
Shannon Bork, a senior art major, a daughter of Debbie Leithner of Ridgway and a graduate of Elk County Catholic High School.
Deanna McCune, a freshman secondary education/English major, a daughter of Christine Nyilas of Plum and a graduate of Plum High School.
Nicole Knestrick, a junior psychology major, a daughter of Norma Knestrick of Muse and a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School.
Samantha Yanuck, a junior finance/real estate major, is a daughter of David and Lori Yanuck of Acme and is a graduate of Connellsville High School.
Amy Denison, a sophomore elementary education major, a daughter of Barbara Denison of Linesville and a graduate of Linesville High School.
Tiffany Atts, a sophomore early childhood education major, a daughter of James and Loni Atts of Oil City and a graduate of Christian Life Academy.
Emily Mosher, a freshman speech pathology major, a daughter of John Mosher of White, Ga., and a graduate of Harrison High School.
Thomas Fair, a junior management major, a son of Kathleen Fair of East Brady and a graduate of Karns City High School.
Greg Gray, a sophomore biology major, a son of Millie Gray of Houston and a graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School.
Dr. Thomas Rourke, professor of political science at Clarion University, has advised the organization since its inception.
