CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield man accused of receiving marijuana through the mail waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
Paul J. Evans is charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to the affidavit of probable cause on Jan. 22 a postal inspector in Pittsburg was contacted by a contractor with the postal inspection service out of McAllen, TX. The call was concerning a priority mail parcel that was identified as being suspicious. The parcel was bound for Clearfield. The Pittsburgh postal inspector gave the OK for the package to be delivered, with attention made to him.
On Jan. 23 the Pittsburg postal inspector received the package, addressed to Brent Leonard at the Evans address. The return address was Edinburg, TX.
The package reportedly weighed 25 pounds, 5 ounces upon receipt. It was placed into a parcel line with known inert parcels. Later that day the Allegheny County Police K-9 Unit examined the parcels in the line and the dog alerted positive on the suspect parcel, indicating a controlled substance.
The postal inspector applied for and was granted a search warrant for the parcel. Inside he found 12 pounds of marijuana. The package was then repackaged in anticipation of a controlled substance to be delivered on Jan. 26.
On Jan. 26 the package was brought to the state police barracks in Clearfield. At that time 10 pounds of marijuana was removed from inside the package and the parcel was repackaged in preparation for delivery.
Later on Jan 26 at 12:44 p.m. Evans came out of his residence and took possession of the package then went back inside. At 12:48 members of the state police executed a search warrant. Inside the residence police found the package that contained the two pounds of marijuana, with about half of that in the kitchen area, a large number of plastic baggies, electronic scale and glass marijuana smoking pipes and a large amount of US currency.
Evans’ bail was set at $50,000. He was released on supervised bail.
