St. Marys — The Clearfield Bisons have relied heavily on the three point shot throughout their season, and has primarily been the reason they have won games. That being said very few people would foresee the Bisons winning a game in which they only hit one shot from behind the arc, and that shot was a half court buzzer beater by Trey Campman to cut an Elk County Catholic lead to four points at the intermission. Even without stellar shooting the Bisons pulled out a victory in a 64-56 thriller in front of a packed house in Elk County.
Things looked good for the Bisons at the start as they raced out to a 9-2 lead just minutes into the first quarter, much in part to Matt Shiner‘s netting eight of his game high 18 points in the frame. After a time out with 5:00 remaining in the period, the Bisons went cold for the remainder of the quarter before finding themselves trailing 13-11 at the horn.
Things didn’t get much better in the second period for Clearfield as Elk County started the second quarter on a 6-0 run. Clearfield Head Coach Forrest Campman called a time out just a little over a minute into the quarter. The timeout helped slowdown the Crusaders run and sparked a 12-2 Clearfield run. The Bisons still found themselves trailing by seven with three seconds to go before Trey Campman threw up a 40 footer at the buzzer to cut the lead to four at intermission.
The half court buzzer beater by Campman gave Clearfield the momentum they needed to spark a comeback. Five different Bisons were able to score in the third stanza as Parker Herrington paved the way netting six points in the frame, all from the free throw line. Clearfield found themselves up 50-44 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Bisons continued to hold their composure and keep their lead. Things looked dicey for Clearfield with 4:00 to go as Elk County narrowed the lead to three points, but that’s as close as they would get as Jarrin Campman, Chad Zurat, and Shiner hit clutch free throws down the stretch. When the final buzzer rang the Bisons found themselves on the victorious end of a 64-56 score.
