On Monday, January 26 the DuBois Area Beavers suffered another painful loss to Greater Johnstown 81-56. With the loss the Beavers move to 3-12 on the season.
Despite coming in fresh off a motivational win against Punxsutawney last week, the DuBois Beavers were unable to get it done twice in a row. Greater Johnstown however has had an impressive season thus far holding a record of 11-3 after Monday’s game and carrying an impressive five game winning streak. Greater Johnstown has defeated a lot of tough teams this year such as Altoona and Bishop Guilfoyle. They also play in a very tough conference (Laurel Highlands 2) with four out of six teams winning more than 70% of their match-ups this year. So on paper Greater Johnston is a very good team.
DuBois came into the game with a mindset to prove the paper wrong, but as the ball was tipped off, Greater Johnston proved to be the better team and easily defeated a Beaver team that still has scars from the last three years. By the end of the first quarter Greater Johnston had gained a 20-11 lead, just as easily advancing into the second quarter digging the DuBois Beaver hole deeper with the score at halftime 43-25. DuBois leading scorer of this season Jordan Labue drained only 38% of his shots, even though he went on to lead the Beavers Monday night with 16 points.
Greater Johnstown’s Paul Weatherly did not have much trouble against the Beavers defense by scoring 21 points and shooting at 83% completion. Five players had over 10 points on Greater Johnstown’s team. The Beavers defense did not have an answer for the intense pace as Johnstown had a very fast run and gun offense and a very quick shut down defense. DuBois was unable to outscore Greater Johnstown in the remaining half of play eventually losing 81-56.
DuBois needs to win just one more game this season to attain the best record they have had in the last three seasons.
