DUBOIS – The DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) girls basketball team held the Curwensville Lady Tide to just two field goals in the first half helping them cruise to a 40-24 victory Monday night.
The loss has the Lady Tide staring at an 0-13 record while the Lady Cardinals moved to 6-9 on the 2008-09 season.
The Tide scored just 10 points in the first sixteen minutes, with six of that total coming from the free throw line, enabling DCC to take a 17-10 halftime lead. In fact Curwensville didn’t hit on a field goal until the 6:46 mark of the second quarter by junior Tess Bloom – who had the only two pointers (two) for the Tide in the opening half of play.
The Lady Cardinals pretty much sealed the victory in the third quarter as they outscored their visitors from Curwensville 14-4 to take a commanding 17 point lead into the final eight minutes at the Varischetti Sports Complex.
Hannah Walls lead the Tide in scoring with a total of eleven points. Walls went to the charity stripe almost as much as the Cardinals as the senior guard made 7 of 15 free throws. Bloom helped out with eight on the night.
DCC had nine of eleven players put points on the board with freshman Lauressa Gulvas knocking down ten. Miller Hopkins dumped in seven.
Afterwards Curwensville head coach Vic Gearhart stated, “We just came out flat tonight and we certainly can‘t afford that. We couldn’t beat the press, we keep getting killed on the boards and we let them push us around physically. That sums it up pretty well.”
Gearhart then talked about his defense, “This team (Curwensville) is not that bad defensively. We only give up less than 45 points per game which should keep us in most games.”
Neither team hit on a three pointer the entire game.
Curwensville will attempt to gather it’s first win of the year when they travel to West Branch to battle the Lady Warriors on Thursday night.
In junior varsity action DuBois Central Catholic also prevailed in beating the Lady Tide 34-16.
