PSP Clearfield: Mahaffey Woman Scammed out of Nearly $5,000

MAHAFFEY – State police in Clearfield reported a scam that resulted in a loss of nearly $5,000 for a Mahaffey woman.

According to police the 81-year-old woman received phone calls between Nov. 19 through the Nov. 21 from a man who impersonated her grandson. During their conversations the caller told the woman that he needed money sent to Toronto, Canada to cover damages from an alleged rental car accident.

The woman made two money transfers totaling $4,998 to a location in Toronto without verifying any of the information. She did not discover that she was scammed until Nov. 24 after she became suspicious due to not hearing back from the “grandson.”

Police are reminding residents to verify any and all information prior to sending any money or money orders.
