Local Youth Take Home Top Awards at 2008 PA State 4-H Horse Show

CLEARFIELD – The 49th annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show was held Oct. 24, 25 and 26 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Youth from over 60 counties participated in this year’s show. Approximately 880 youth and 1,000 horses competed in 49 performance and 91 production classes.

The state show is the final competition of the year for 4-H horse club members enrolled in performance and production projects. To be eligible for the show, members must advance through qualifying competitions at county, regional and district levels. Events include breed conformation and futurity classes in the production division, plus showmanship, equitation, pleasure, over fences, driving, western riding, reining, trail, county team, pleasure pairs and timed events in the performance division. A therapeutic riding division for riders with special needs is also included. Results and photos from the show are available on the Pennsylvania 4-H Horse Program website.

All performance and production champions in the show were awarded halters and leads, grooming boxes, or other awards donated by Perri’s Leather of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. All reserve champions received the book, I See Spots, donated by the author, Kathy Rose. All exhibitors received fly spray donated by Pyranha and products from Farnam, Inc. In addition, a randomly selected participant in every performance class received a gift donated by many horse show supporters. All exhibitors in the therapeutic riding division received medallions donated by Hoy’s Trophies and Awards of Export, Pennsylvania.

New to the state show were six clinics sponsored by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association (PQHA), and the state show. Clinics and demonstrations with horses and riders were conducted by faculty and staff of the Penn State Equine Science Program. Brian Egan, Instructor of Equine Science, and Equine Extension Associates for the 4-H Horse Program, Bethany Bickel and Lew Trumble provided hands-on clinics for over 500 youth and adult participants. The clinics included horsemanship, handling and riding techniques for use with all breeds and disciplines.

In addition to the class placings, three local youth were recognized for additional horse accomplishments:
• Chelsea Folmar of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club was recognized as a Master Showman Recipient. This is a special ward given to horse handler with production projects that demonstrate exemplary horsemanship handling skills. Chelsea is the daughter of Scott & Crystal Folmar of Luthersburg.
• Shalise Gallaher of the Cowboy Up 4-H Club was recognized with three other 4-H members from across the state for completing level 3 of the Pennsylvania 4-H Horsemanship Skills Program. Shalise is the daughter of Dave & Rhonda Gallaher of Grampian.
• Katie McAndrew of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club was recognized along with 4 other 4-H members from across the state for being named as a finalist for the Pennsylvania Outstanding 4-H Horse Member Award. Katie is the daughter of Joseph & Debbie McAndrew of Brockway.

Plans are underway for the 50th anniversary of the State 4-H Horse Show in 2009. Dates for the 2009 show are October 23-25. The show will honor volunteers, extension and industry professionals, 4-H youth and alumni who have contributed to the history and excellence of the 4-H horse program since its inception.

There are over 6,000 4-H horse projects involving youth throughout Pennsylvania. Programs are designed to develop life skills in youth and knowledge of horse production, use, and management. 4-H is a non-formal youth development educational program of Penn State Cooperative Extension for all youth between the ages of 8 and 19, regardless of age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, religious creed, sex, or sexual orientation. For additional information on the 4-H program or to locate a 4-H club in your area, contact Jana Lynne Davidson at the Clearfield County Cooperative Extension Office at 814-765-7878 Ext. 3.
