Parks in Curwensville and Clearfield Awarded Grants

HOUTZDALE – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Houtzdale, said $170,000 in grants are heading to Clearfield and Curwensville Boroughs for park improvements and projects.

“Municipalities and non-profit groups in Clearfield County have sought and won almost $600,000 in Community Conservation Partnership grants over the last three years,” George said. “The funding provides economic opportunities for businesses, enriches communities and expands recreational activities for citizens.”

George said Clearfield Borough will receive a $150,000 grant, administered by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, for projects at Upper Witmer Park, the Riverwalk, and Bucky Strunk Memorial Field.

Work at Upper Witmer Park will include installation of play equipment and safety surfacing, construction of a pedestrian walkway, access improvements and landscaping.

The Riverwalk projects include construction of a walkway from Bridge Street to South Second Street, lighting and landscaping. Improvements planned at Bucky Strunk Memorial Field at Sixth Street and Arnold Avenue include lighting and landscaping.

Curwensville Borough will receive $20,000 to upgrade Irvin Park, including renovations to the ball field, installation of fencing, landscaping and other improvements.

The 15-county Lumber Heritage Region, which includes Clearfield County, also was awarded $81,000 for various projects.

Funding for the Community Conservation Partnership grants comes from the varied state and federal funds, including the Growing Greener II bond fund that voters approved overwhelmingly in 2005.
