Huntingdon—All streaks eventually come to an end, and the Bisons learned that Friday night while visiting the Huntingdon Bearcats. Clearfield came into the game riding a 7 game winning streak in which they were averaging more than 35 points a contest, but were able to muster a mere 7 points in the game.
The Bison offense had been near invincible coming into the game, but was held to their lowest yardage and scoring output on the season due in part mostly to turnovers and penalties.\”We had a rough night,\” Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said. \”We didn\’t do much right in any facet. We made too many mistakes, and just didn\’t do anything well. But these are high school kids, and you\’re going to have these nights. It\’s hard to be perfect every night.\”
The Bisons wounds weren’t all self inflicted, as Huntingdon’s defense put on a display that showed why they had only given up 24 combined points in their previous three games. The Bearcats defense line pressured quarterback Jarrin Campman all night long making close to impossible to spot any open receivers downfield.
It seemed as though the Bisons were perhaps doomed from the start as they failed to score a single point in the first quarter, the first time all season the Bisons failed to put points on the board in a quarter. The Bison defense held their own though also not allowing a single point in the first period. For the Bisons though it was not as if they did not have an opportunity to score early. A fumbled exchange between Campman and running back Isaiah Morgan led to a costly turnover in the Bisons only sustained drive of the quarter. Turnovers would seem to plague the Bisons all game as Campman would also throw 2 interceptions, one of which was returned 91 yards for a score.
\”Turnovers killed us,\” Janocko said. \”Initially, they did a couple things on defense that we had to address. They were submarining our offensive linemen, but after we figured it out, our kids started to move the ball. But then we had the fumble. Turnovers really killed us. We were going in and could have been up 7-0 there.\”
The Bisons also were able to come up with turnovers on the defensive side of the ball as well, as brothers Jarrin and Trey Campman both came up with big interceptions, but the offense was able to do little with the change of possessions.
Also for the first time Friday night the Bisons did not put a single rusher over the 100 yard mark as Morgan, who entered the game with over 1,200 yards, was held to only 54 yards on the ground. Campman led the team with 20 carries for 78 yards. Perhaps the Bisons only bright spot of the game was Trey Campman’s 7 catches for 77 yards which no gives him 40 catches and over 450 yards on the season.
The Bisons lone score came on a 6 yard scamper from Jarrin Campman with 8:03 remaining in the 3rd quarter to cut the deficit to 14 points, but on the Bison following possession Campman was flagged for intentional grounding from his own endzone on a controversial call which led to an automatic safety and completely deflated the chances of a Bison comeback.
The Bisons will return to the Clearfield Bisons Sports Complex to take on rival St. Marys on Senior Night with kickoff scheduled for 7 P.M.
