Campus Corner: Sipes, Sopic Near Top of Clarion Grid Stats

ERIE, Pa. – Fullback Nick Sipes had seven touches for 27 yards and free safety Shawn Sopic was involved in four tackles against Gannon Saturday night, but Clarion tumbled to 1-4 with a 31-14 setback in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game that attracted 2,168 fans to Gannon University Field.
 
The two sophomores from Curwensville remain near the top of Golden Eagle statistics.
 
Sipes, who carried six times for 11 yards and caught one pass for 16 yards, leads Clarion backs with a 5.8 average. His 38 carries and 222 yards are second on the team. He has scored two touchdowns and also has five receptions for 20 yards.
 
In addition, Sipes teamed up with Sopic for a tackle on the punt unit for his fifth stop of the season.
 
Sopic\’s lone solo tackle forced a fumble that was recovered by the Golden Eagles.
 
He is second in solo tackles with 15 and tied for second in total tackles with 28.
 
Sopic has accounted for Clarion\’s only two interceptions.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman quarterback Andrew Janocko of Clearfield handled his role as holder with perfection for placekicker Conor Lee Saturday as the Pitt senior booted four field goals and two extra points in a come-from-behind 34-24 win over Syracuse with 27,549 fans looking on in the Carrier Dome.
 
Lee, who was on target from 40, 43, 44 and 25 yards, was honored by the Big East Conference as the Special Teams Player of the Week and also was cited as one of three Lou Groza Award \”Stars of the Week.\” Groza was a standout National Football League placekicker for the Cleveland Browns. The award is sponsored by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
 
Lee (Upper St. Clair High School/Fork Union Academy) has never missed a PAT for the Panthers, with the streak at 85.
 
Pitt is 3-1 after its Big East Conference opener.

ERIE, Pa. – Redshirt junior linebacker Nate Sipes of Curwensville made five stops and sophomore offensive guard J.D. Skebo of Curwensville saw his first action of the season for Slippery Rock Saturday in a 34-10 loss to host Mercyhurst at Tullio Field.
 
A crowd of 2,877 saw The Rock fall to 1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division and 3-2 overall.
 
Mercyhurst (3-2) is the PSAC-West co-leader at 2-0.
 
Sipes had three solo tackles for the third time, and one was for a loss of two yards.
 
He has 15 total tackles.

LANCASTER, Pa. – Junior defensive back Beau Ryan of Clearfield assisted on one tackle as Juniata fell to 0-4 with a 14-0 loss to host Franklin & Marshall in Middle Atlantic Conference action at Sponaugle-Williamson Stadium Saturday.
 
He has five solo tackles and two assists for the Eagles, now 0-2 in the MAC.

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore tailback Tyler Kirkwood of Frenchville (Clearfield Area High School) played for Grove City in Saturday\’s Presidents\’ Athletic Conference loss to 49-21 loss to undefeated Washington & Jefferson in front of 2,724 fans at Cameron Stadium.
 
He has appeared in every game for the Wolverines, who are 2-2 with a 1-1 PAC record.
 
W & J (4-0) sits atop the PAC at 2-0.

MEN\’S SOCCER
 
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Mark Auman of Clearfield was instrumental in the lone goal as Lock Haven nipped West Chester 1-0 in non-conference action Saturday.
 
He advanced the ball into the box, where Tommy Ehrlich played it across to Paul Huckett for the score in the 78th minute.
 
Auman got his seventh start for the 6-4-1 Bald Eagles after subbing in a 2-1 victory at Slippery Rock on Sept. 23. That win raised Lock Haven\’s record to 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division.
 
Auman has one assists and five shots, one on goal, in 10 games.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Junior forward Lucas Feathers of Clearfield managed three shots, one on goal, for Slippery Rock in a 2-1 loss to Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division scrap on Sept. 23.
 
He missed The Rock\’s 2-1 win at Millersville Saturday but still ranks second on the team with three goals, seven points and 19 shots. He is tied for second in shots on goal with nine.
 
The Rock is 5-3-1, including 1-2 in the PSAC-West.

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore midfield John Lhota of Clearfield was a substitute for Westminster in a 2-1 win over LaRoche on Sept. 24.
 
He has two starts in eight games, and three of his four shots have been on goal for the Titans (3-3-2).

WOMEN\’S SOCCER
 
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Dani Struble of Lumber City (Curwensville Area H.S.) registered one shot in each game as Westminster posted victories over LaRoche 5-0 at Pittsburgh and Baldwin-Wallace 2-1 at Berea, Ohio, last week.
 
The Titans have won four of five road games for a 7-2-1 record.
 
Struble has started seven games, including the last five. She has attempted nine shots, one on goal.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – After missing three games, sophomore forward Juliana Howell of Clearfield returned to the starting lineup for Slippery Rock Saturday and was credited with one shot in the 1-0 non-conference win over visiting Bloomsburg.
 
In six games, she has scored two goals, one a game-winner, in six shots, three of them on goal. She also has one assist for five total points.
 
The Rock, ranked No. 4 in the Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, went into this week 4-1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division and 7-1-1 for the season.
