Punxsuatwney Denies Chiefs\’ Bid for Second Place in JCL

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Clearfield stepped on to Rich Kuntz Memorial Field Monday evening with a chance to overtake Punxsutawney for second place in the Jefferson County Legion Baseball League, but the hosts built a 7-0 lead after three innings and went on to triumph 11-4.

Though Punxsy (15-5) still had a mathematical chance to catch, or even pass, front-running DuBois (14-3), the standings after the make-up game were declared final so that the JCL\’s post-season tournament can get under way Wednesday.

Clearfield\’s make-up game scheduled for Tuesday at DuBois has been canceled, as have DuBois\’ suspended 6-6 tie with Reynoldsville and a rainout with Curwensville.

Third-place Clearfield (12-7) will return to Punxsy and fourth-place Brookville (7-13) will go to DuBois for the 5:30 p.m. openers of the JCL\’s double-elimination playoffs. All games will go nine innings.

Manager Sid Lansberry\’s Chiefs, 15-12 overall, had trouble solving winner Sean Smith until the outcome had been decided.

Losing pitcher Parker Herrington broke up Smith\’s shutout in the fourth inning with a single after Adam Jury was hit by a pitch and Kyle Kline walked.

James Zimmermann singled and scored on Herrington\’s sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Kyle Timchak\’s double and pinch-hitter Andrew Redden\’s single led to the final two runs in the seventh. After Jarrin Campman walked, Dylan Kachmar relieved Smith and induced Zimmermann to ground into a double play as Timchak scored. Jury doubled home Redden before Kachmar retired Kline to end the game.

Punxsy collected 11 hits off Herrington, who pitched three innings, and Corey Bookhamer.

Nick Pascuzzo singled three times and drove in two runs, while Tommy Bush and Nick Gillung slugged two-run homers and Dave Kopas added a two-RBI single.
