Chiefs Win, Babe Ruth League All-stars Lose in Clearfield Tourney Openers

CLEARFIELD – One Clearfield team won and the other lost on opening day in the Clearfield American Legion Independence Day Baseball Invitational Saturday.

Corey Bookhamer and Michael Moyer combined on a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Clearfield Legion Post 6 Chiefs evened their record at 10-10 by trimming Laurel Eye Clinic of Brookville 6-2 in the nightcap of the triple-header at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field.

In the opener, delayed nearly one hour because of muddy and soggy field conditions, Mike Pascarella\’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Bradford Legion to an 11-9 win over the Clearfield Babe Ruth League All-Stars after the Post 102 team had overcome an 8-1 third-inning deficit.

Bookhamer held the Brookville Legion Post 102 team to two hits and two earned runs in an outstanding six-inning stint for his second win in four decisions. The left-hander struck 10 and walked only one.

Moyer fanned two of the three batters he faced in the seventh inning.

Clearfield jumped in front 2-0 in the second. Derek Danver walked and scored from first when Aaron Sayers\’ single to right was misplayed. Sayers then scored on Tanner St. Clair\’s groundout.

James Zimmermann reached base on a forceout and circled the sacks on a stolen base, a passed ball and a wild pitch in the third.

Justin Hoffman\’s single and stolen bases and Wil Bacharach\’s double made it 4-1 in the fifth.

With a 4-2 lead in the seventh, the Chiefs produced two insurance runs on Hoffman\’s third hit and RBI-singles by Zimmerman and Parker Herrington.

Chris Beitz singled home Brookville\’s first run in the fourth inning. Dakota Singleton doubled and scored on Brandon Brownlee\’s groundout in the fifth.

The Clearfield BRL 15-year-olds walked to their early lead against Bradford with the help of a dozen free passes from two Post 102 hurlers.

With two outs in the first inning, Derek Danver scored on a wild pitch and Trevor Flanagan walked on four pitches to force in Curtis Frye.

Dan McCracken relieved Josh Lightner and stranded three runners with a strikeout. He added two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 second inning before experiencing control problems with one out in the third.

McCracken issued six consecutive walks on 31 pitches, the easy RBIs going to  Luke Peterson, Flanagan and Robert Lombardo.

The Clearfield BRL All-Stars had posted five runs without a hit when Lou Jones went to the mound. One out later, Tyler Jacobson slashed a run-scoring single to left and Jason Bowman cracked a two-run double to right center.

Bases-loaded doubles by Kevin Pautler to right center in the third inning and Cory Viola to deep left center in the fifth fueled the Bradford Legion\’s comeback.

Down 9-8 in the sixth, the Clearfield BRL All-Stars tied the game on Bowman\’s double to right center, Isaac Butler\’s single through the middle and Danver\’s double-play grounder.

Tyler Knepp was tagged with the loss when he walked Pat Pascarella and Mike Pascarella walloped his homer over the fence in dead center.

The \’W\’ went to Jones, who worked 4-1/3 innings and struck out six. He gave up eight hits but allowed only one run.

The Clearfield BRL All-Stars got the tying and winning runs aboard in the seventh when Flanagan singled to deep right, Drew Brown punched a hit to short right center and, with two outs, Bowman walked.

Slater replaced Jones and picked up a one-pitch save as Isaac Butler bounced into a very close force play at second.

LaBrozzi had two singles, a double, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs for the winners. Mike Pascarella collected three hits and scored four times. Brandon Slater added two singles.

Bradford upped its record to 16-5 with a 6-1 victory over Brookville (6-11) in the other game.

Sunday\’s card shows the Clearfield BRL All-Stars playing Laurel Eye Clinic at 11 a.m. and the Clearfield Legion taking on the Bradford Legion at 1:30 p.m. before the all-Clearfield finale at 4 o\’clock.
