BROOKVILLE – Strong pitching performances by right-handers Parker Herrington and Michael Moyer carried the Clearfield American Legion Post No. 6 baseball team to an important double-header sweep against Laurel Eye Clinic at McKinley Field Tuesday night.
The Chiefs tightened their grip on third place in the Jefferson County League with the 4-2 and 5-0 wins.
Manager Sid Lansberry\’s club climbed to 9-5 and dropped the fourth-place Brookville team to 6-8.
Herrington scattered four hits over six innings in the opener, which was the completion of the June 3 game suspended in the second inning because of rain. He struck out six, walked four and gave up one earned run.
Moyer worked a scoreless, one-hit inning for his first save and then fired a three-hit shutout in the nightcap, fanning eight and walking four for his fourth victory in five decisions.
Kyle Kline banged out two hits in each game and drove in three runs to pace Clearfield\’s offense. Aaron Sayers enjoyed a three-hit, two-RBI second game.
The suspended game started with the bases full of Chiefs, who were leading 1-0 with no outs.
Nick Bishop\’s first offering was a wild pitch, allowing Herrington to score. Two outs later, Kline made it 3-0 with a run-producing single.
The Chiefs added their final run in the sixth on three walks and Adam Jury\’s sacrifice fly.
Singles by Dakota Singleton and Mike Lindemuth around Clearfield\’s lone error ended Herrington\’s shutout bid in the bottom of the inning. Dustin Dombrowski scored when Lindemuth got caught in a rundown.
Chase Lyle, who beat the Chiefs 8-4 on May 18 and 6-3 on June 16, kept them at bay again in a mound duel with Moyer that was scoreless through five innings.
Clearfield finally broke through in the sixth.
Jury walked, Kline sacrificed and Sayers singled up the middle for the first run. Corey Bookhamer followed with an RBI-single.
In the seventh, Kline cranked a two-run double to deep left center and scored when Sayers singled through the right side.
Jury and Bookhamer contributed two singles apiece to Clearfield\’s 11-hit attack.
The Chiefs, 9-10 overall, are booked for an 8 p.m. JCL game at Punxsutawney Thursday and will host their annual Independence Day tourney Saturday and Sunday at the Lawrence Township Recreational Park Field.
