Mid Season Championship Action Draws Crowd at Hummingbird

Reynoldsville–Saturday night was the mid season championship and double points night at Hummingbird Speedway.

The Prontock Beer Distributor RWD 4 cylinders took the track first. Last time we raced they ran the feature caution free, but that was not to happen this time. It took three tries before we actually got in a full green flag lap. Two separate spins in turn 2 sent the cars of Snuffy Smith, Mike Maines, and John Gilbert to the back of the field. Bill McMillen Sr. and Tim Bailey led the field to the green, but Bob Ralston Jr. would lead lap one. Bill Washek would jump into second on lap two. The caution waived again on lap 5 as Tim Bailey and Don Henry spun in turn 3. Ralston continued to lead until a lap eight caution as George Bailey stopped on the backstretch. Bill Washek would take the lead on lap 9 and cruise to the victory followed by Mike Anderson, Orin Taylor and Bill Mcmillen Sr.

A caution for a spin in turn 2 involving Dennis Asel and Ron Mitchell tightened up the field. As the Green waived a battle raged between Dan Smeal and Fuzzy Fields. Most of the time these two were side by side, door to door around the track. Fields was able to take second on lap 11, but he was not able to reel in the leader. As thunder rumbled in the distance, the Brookville Wood Products/ BWP Bats Limited Late Models Stormed the track, with Eric Moore and Rich Wolmeldorf pacing the field.

Eric Moore would lead the first 9 laps, but the fastest car on the track was Jason Whitherite. A caution for the spin of Brian Molnar on lap 9 bunched up the field and that was the break Whitherite was looking for. Whitherite took the lead on the first green flag lap after the caution, and would go on to take the checkered flag. Moore held on for second with a great battle for third between Bob McMillen and Luke Hoffner for third. Hoffner made the pass with 4 laps left to bump McMillen back to fourth and Dwayne Brooks in fifth. A notable absence from double points night, was Dave Shagla after his hard crash two weeks ago

A caution on lap 3 resulted when Bruce Hartzfeld spun in turn three. With nowhere to go Ray Reed slammed right into his drivers door, and John Barley also cilpped the Hartzfeld car. With Rhed on the point and Asel close behind the green flag waived setting up some great door to door action. The to would do battle for 9 laps until Asel finally got by with three to go. Rhed held on for second followed by Dustin Mischuck subbing for Jeff Krach. Billy Mumau and Jerry Walls rounded out the top five.
