Chiefs Defeat Haymakers 9-5 in JCL Legion Action

HEPBURNIA – Clearfield broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning and went on to defeat Curwensville 9-5 in a Jefferson County Legion League game at Thorp Twins Memorial Field Friday evening.

Wil Bacharach had a pair of run-scoring singles, Adam Jury homered and singled and Parker Herrington, Justin Hoffman and Aaron Sayers each had a pair of singles for the Chiefs, who hiked their record to 5-3 in the JCL and 5-4 overall.

Michael Moyer went the distance for his second win in three decisions. He twirled a seven-hitter and struck out eight Haymakers while walking three.

Only one of Curwensville\’s runs was earned, that coming in the bottom of the seventh inning when Wes McGarry singled, stole second and scored on Derek Dixon\’s third consecutive hit. Ben McGary followed with a line single to center, but the Clearfield infield turned its second double play to end the game.

Both of Dixon\’s earlier hits were doubles to the right center gap.

His first one was good for an RBI in the third inning, when the Haymakers took advantage of three errors to knot the score at 3-3.

The Chiefs, who stranded 13 runners, managed two runs after solid singles by Herrington, Hoffman and Jury loaded the bases in the first inning. Herrington scored on Moyer\’s double play grounder and Hoffman trotted home on Isaac Butler\’s opposite-field hit into left field.

Jury\’s homer to left made it 3-0 in the third.

Sayers walked and raced all the around with the go-ahead run when David Ryan\’s sacrifice bunt was thrown away at first. Bacharach singled for another run and later scored on Herrington\’s groundout.

In the sixth, Ryan handled a high fastball for a bases-loaded suicide bunt, and Bacharach followed with an RBI-single to center.

Hoffman doubled down the third base line and scored on a two-out error in the seventh.

Brett McCracken took the loss, giving up eight hits and four earned runs in five innings.

Both teams will be back in action Monday, Clearfield at home against Brookville and Curwensville (2-6, 2-5 CPL) at Punxsutawney.
