Police Investigating Hanright Death

CLEARFIELD – The state police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old Morris Township man who was involved in a three-vehicle accident which resulted in five people being flown from the scene, including two children, on Monday.

According to the report, Michael Philip Hanright, 23 of Allport, died as a result of a self inflicted, single gunshot wound to the head later on the same day.

Hanright was traveling east along U.S. Route 322, when he left the roadway on the south shoulder. He overtook the right side of a tractor-trailer driven by Stanley H. Hale, 48, of Hermitage, police said.

Hanright then swerved left and entered the roadway and directly into the path of the Hale tractor-trailer. His vehicle made contact with the right front of the truck.

After the Hanright vehicle impacted Hale’s truck, he entered the westbound lane of U.S. Route 322 and in front of a tri-axle driven by Stephen A. Cowher, 46, of Tyrone. The Hanright and Cowher vehicles then struck each other. Hanright then struck a utility pole after the impact with the tri-axle.

Two passengers in the Hanright vehicle were ejected but not identified by police. Michele Hazel, 34, of Morrisdale, suffered serious injuries. Hanright sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident. One unidentified female died as a result of the accident.
