State Police Warn of License Plate Scam

RIDGWAY – The Pennsylvania State police are advising citizens that an e-mail circulating in Pennsylvania warning people that license plates are being stolen from vehicles in order to steal gasoline is a hoax.

Versions of the e-mail forwarded to state police by citizens claim that if your license plate is missing, the plate is being used on another vehicle in drive-off gasoline thefts. The e-mail indicates that the plate owner could be held responsible for the theft.

The department did not generate this message and suggests that anyone who receives such an e-mail simply delete it. Police ask that citizens not become a part of the hoax by forwarding it as the information is not true.
