Mahaffey – On June 21, the community of Mahaffey will recognize and commemorate the bravery of Pfc. Melvin Brown.
Brown, a native of Mahaffey and one of three Clearfield County Medal of Honor recipients, lost his life in the Korean War, Sept. 4, 1950 while securing Hill 755 (the Walled City) near Kasan, Korea.
On Jan. 9, 1951, Brown’s parents received his Medal of Honor from President Harry Truman. He is buried in the Mahaffey Cemetery.
A service, to dedicate a monument and flagpole in honor of Brown, will begin at 11 a.m. June 21 in front of the Mahaffey Firehall located on Market Street in Mahaffey. Also to be noted is the nearby bridge over the West Branch of the Susquehanna River that has been renamed Pfc. Melvin Brown Memorial Bridge through the efforts of state Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Houtzdale.
There will also be events at Scout Community Park in Mahaffey following the service including craft tables, food prepared by local organizations, music and ball tournaments.
