Chiefs Down Haymakers 9-1 in Jefferson County Legion Action

HYDE – Kyle Kline and Parker Herrington combined for five hits and five runs batted in while Michael Moyer pitched a six-hitter for Clearfield in a 9-1 Jefferson County Legion League victory over Curwensville at the Bison Sports Complex Saturday evening.

The Post No. 6 Chiefs climbed above .500 for the first time at 3-2.

The Haymakers of Post No. 505 fell to 1-1 in the league and 1-2 overall.

Manager Sid Lansberry\’s Chiefs scored in the first inning on Kline\’s sacrifice fly that plated Jarrin Campman, who had walked and raced all the way to third on James Zimmermann\’s groundout.

Curwensville matched that with a run in the second with Brett Sutika picking up the RBI via a groundout. Joe Bloom had singled and advanced on a sacrifice and an error when he was caught in a rundown.

The first of three hits by Herrington touched off Clearfield\’s five-run outburst in the bottom of the inning.

Justin Hoffman walked and Moyer was safe on his bunt when first base was left uncovered. Haymaker first baseman Mark Dell\’Antonio speared David Ryan\’s liner for a double play, but loser Ianniq Ecklund plunked Campman and Zimmermann to force in what proved to be the winning run.

An error on Adam Jury\’s grounder gave the Chiefs two more runs, and Kline then tripled to deep left center for two RBIs.

Curwensville center fielder Ben McGary suffered a broken nose and several facial cuts when he crashed into the fence trying to make the catch.

McGary was taken by ambulance to the Clearfield Hosptial, where he was treated and released.

The Chiefs posted their final three runs in the fourth frame. After a walk and Kline\’s second hit, Derek Danver singled across one tally and Herrington doubled, his third hit and second two-bagger, for two RBIs.

Moyer struck out seven and walked three for his first JCL win in two decisions.

Bloom had two hits for the Haymakers.

Clearfield has road games against non-league opponent Bellefonte Monday and Brookville Tuesday.
