Riverfront Festival Returns to Clearfield
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County’s official welcome to the summer season kicks off Thursday with free, family-style entertainment.
The annual Clearfield Riverfront Festival starts Thursday with vendors opening at noon. The festival runs through Saturday night in Clearfield’s Lower Witmer Park.
From steak-on-a-stick to candy apples and hot sausage to cotton candy, all types of food will be up for sampling through the three-day event. Craft vendors with various baubles, knickknacks and trinkets of all sorts will also be on hand each day. Festival-goers can also expect free, live entertaiment every day of the festival.

Osceola Mills Man Enters Guilty Plea
CLEARFIELD – On the day he was headed for trial, Matthew Charles Kennedy, 24, of Osceola Mills entered a guilty plea on three charges Wednesday morning.
He pleaded guilty to reckless driving, failure to stop and give information/render aid and failure to notify police of an accident/injury or death.
As a result, Kennedy faces a $210 fine and costs for reckless driving and a $35 fine and costs for both of the latter charges.

Alleged Beer Burglars Waive Hearings
CLEARFIELD – The three men accused of breaking into a beer distributor last week waived their rights to preliminary hearings on Wednesday.
Eric J. Hammill of Olanta is charged with burglary criminal attempt; criminal trespass; and purchase, consumption, possession or transportation of malt or brewed beverages.
Cory L. Reinard of Clearfield is charged with burglary; criminal attempt; criminal trespass; selling or furnishing liquor or malt or brewed beverages to minors; criminal mischief and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Joshua W. Daub of Clearfield is charged with burglary; criminal attempt; criminal trespass and possession or transportation of liquor or malt or brewed beverages.
The Clearfield Borough Police Department reported last week that it was called to Budget Beverage for a burglary in-progress Thursday night. On scene, officers met with a witness who stated that he observed several men climbing through a hole in a garage door on the south side of the building leading into the building.

Clearfield Man Accused of Fondling Child Waives Hearing
CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield man accused of fondling a child waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
William H. Marks is charged with indecent assault and unlawful contact with a minor.
According to court records Marks fondled the child between Dec. 1, 2006 and Jan. 23, 2008.

Clearfield Man Waives Hearing on Aggravated Assault by Vehicle Case
CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield man accused of aggravated assault while driving under the influence waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
Jeffrey Rexford Powell is charged with DUI (Bac .10 percent-to-.16 percent); DUI (highest rate of alcohol); five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle and related charges.
According to court records on March 21 police were called to an accident on Washington Avenue. Officers made contact with the people involved in the accident. Powell was driving a truck while the alleged victim in the case was driving a Hyundai. Three children in the car suffered injuries. The woman and a fourth child suffered abrassions. Police spoke with Powell, and asked for his license, insurance and registration. To get to the information police had to climb through the window of the truck to get the records.
Officers asked Powell if he needed treatment, and he reportedly refused. He was asked if he had been drinking and allegedly said “moderately.” It was at this time that they detected alcohol on his breath.

CASD Commends Guidance Counselors, Administration
CLEARFIELD – John Law, principal of the Clearfield Area High School, commended the guidance staff and administration for their support services following a two-vehicle accident Friday morning that has claimed the lives of two students.
“They were outstanding in such a tough time,” he said. “They were needed and have been just fantastic.”
Law said he was proud of the measures that both the school’s administration and guidance counselors took to help the students.

Congress Hill Accident Claims Life of a Second Juvenile
LECONTES MILLS – A 17-year-old boy died Sunday as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of state Route 879 and Congress Hill Road in Girard Township, the Clearfield State Police reported. His name was not released by police.
Clearfield County Coroner R. Joel Heath pronounced Leanna Shugarts, 17, of Frenchville, dead at the scene.
According to the report, the accident occurred when the car entered SR 879 from the intersection of Congress Hill Road and subsequently drove into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by Paul Brown Jr., of Port Matilda.

Commissioners get Update on DuBois Regional Airport
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield-Jefferson Regional Airport Manager Bob Shaffer gave the Clearfield County Commissioners an update on the status of the airport since Mesa Airways stopped providing service to DUJ on May 23.
“The airport is not closing,” said Shaffer.
He added that while the airport currently has no air provider, they are expecting one to begin service on Aug. 15.
The new provider will be Gulfstream International, a private company that will fly passengers to an air hub in Cleveland, OH.

Country Jamin’ the Valley Returns to Fairgrounds June 27
CLEARFIELD – Country Jamin’ the Valley returns to the Clearfield Fairgrounds on June 27 and June 28.
Join Smokin Joe and his Wild Horse band and their friends for music and food at the third annual event.
Festivities begin on June 27 at 6 p.m. and run until 10 p.m.; on June 28, Noon to 9 p.m.
There is no admission charge for the event.
