Catch the Reading Bug at Shaw Public Library

CLEARFIELD – The Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library invites all area youth to join the 2008 summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug”. The Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult and offers programs, prize drawings, stories, and more. Families are invited to attend the Family Fun Nights that will be offered throughout the summer.

Registration for Summer Reading begins on June 11 and continues throughout the summer during the 6-weeks of programming. The first program is the kickoff event “What’s all the buzz?” Any youth registering and participating in the event during the official kickoff hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be entered into a drawing for a digital camera sponsored by Melanie Rowles, Judy Duncan, Todd Haley, and Pamela Nelson. The event is being held in memory of John Haley.

The library will once again offer the Read-to-Me program for preschool – K, the school-age A program for youth grade 1 – grade 3, and the school-age B for grade 4 – grade 6. Young adult and adult programming will also be scheduled for the summer lineup in 2008. The Read-to-Me group will be offered programs formatted like a Story Hour with stories, crafts, and games. The school-age groups will be more hands-on and the program lineup is sure to entertain and interest all. Upon registering, each participant will receive a program guide that details the summer schedule.

Throughout the summer, participants will be entertained and educated at a variety of special events. Gene Allen and Adam Swartz will return to the library again this summer. On Thursday, June 19 at 10:30 a.m. Gene Allen will perform his “Catch the Reading Bug” show. Adam Swartz, puppeteer, returns to the library with his “The Great Bug-tacular Game Show” on Thursday, June 26 at 10:30 a.m. Our Family Fun Nights at the library will feature two new performers, Tom Sieling, singer and guitarist/banjoist from New York and Alan Irvine, Storyteller from Pittsburgh, PA. Sieling’s show, “Bugs and Moose…Out on the Loose!” is sure to delight the audience on Monday, June 30 at 6:30 p.m. Irvine will present a program of bug tales for a family audience on Monday, July 21 at 6:30 p.m.

“We are pleased to offer these performers this summer,” stated Marshall, “I know how difficult it is to find affordable solutions for family activities. What better way to spend quality time with our children than at the public library.”

The summer reading program and the Family Fun Nights are made possible by the Commonwealth Library, the Friends of the Shaw Public Library, and the United Way of Clearfield. Shaw Public Library is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. If you would like more information about the summer reading program, please call the library at 765-3271.
