New Recycling Partnership Benefits Animals

CLEARFIELD – The Animal Welfare Council and Novey Metals of Clearfield are joining forces for a new recycling program that will benefit Clearfield County animals served by AWC efforts.

Anyone who wishes to drop off recyclable items at Novey’s West Pine Street location may designate the proceeds to the AWC. In turn, Novey’s staff keep track of the donations.

“It’s that simple. You take the items to Novey’s, tell them its for AWC and we get the money. We are so grateful to be able to partner with Novey’s to help animals and the environment,” said AWC President and founding member Tim Kephart.

AWC members will pick up recyclables from shut-ins or large items from those without a way to transport them. Call 765-6352 or 345-5443 to make arrangements. Donated cars must include titles.

According to Geremy Kephart, also a founding AWC member, the initiative grew from an offhand comment about saving pop cans.

“I was saving them, so was my mother and then others at the office joined in and we were seeing some great results. Then we thought, why not expand to other materials. Then we thought, why not streamline the process. That’s where Mike and Roberta at Novey’s stepped in and helped us create this terrific program,” she explained.

The AWC is a non-profit group that focuses on education and currently provides dog houses and other sheltering structures for animals and is establishing a hay bank for horses. Working with animal control officers, the organization designates funds for emergency medical care and the group holds rabies clinics around the county. Members are also working with students at Clearfield High School on a variety of senior projects.

The council recently held its largest fundraiser, a gala three-day yard sale, to benefit its Angels for Animals committee, the service provider arm of the AWC.

Novey’s accepts copper, brass, brass shells, automobile heater cores, copper radiators, large batteries, lead, cans, aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and tin. Also, cars and appliances, such as refrigerators, washers and dryers, water heaters and dishwashers.
