ST. MARYS – Kids in College classes sponsored by Penn State DuBois will make an encore appearance at the South St. Marys Elementary School or the CEC Building on Erie Avenue, with one class on location at the St. Marys Convent. These future artist, inventors, scientists, readers and explorers will be set to undertake their creative adventures Monday-Thursday, June 23-26.
“It’s a great week to unleash all of your creative powers in a variety of areas,” said Sueann Doran, Youth Program Coordinator for Kids in College. “Everyone will be supported in using their imaginations to create games, watercolors, paper monsters, and/or board games. It’s great to see the kids ‘come alive’ as they are encouraged to explore a variety of materials and ideas with teacher support. Teachers and children, alike, indicate that it’s the best week of the summer.”
For those who want to explore how things like paint, chalk, and graphite pencils can transform paper into works of art, there will be a class Painting Power with Amy Reed. Youth grades four thru six will investigate color mixing and painting techniques to create landscapes and other original projects. That class meets from 10:00 am to noon, June 23-26 at the South St. Marys Elementary School.
For those interested in painting on location, using flowers, trees and color patterns from nature, Art from Life will create at the St. Marys Convent. Two separate sessions of this popular course will be held for two different age groups. Children in grades one to three will be on location from 10:00 am to noon; youth in grades for thru six will explore and paint the Convent grounds from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Local artist and art teacher Pete Winklbauer will be working with both groups of students.
If turning paper into every day animals and monsters is a better way to release your imagination, Creative Paper Crafts with Amy Reed may be the ticket! Children in grades one thru three will make a new creation each day to share with family and friends. This class meets from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, June 23 through June 26, at the South St. Marys Elementary School.
For children who like to explore ideas through books, Dreaming will introduce participants to the world of children’s author Chris Van Allsburg and works like Polar Express and Jumanji. Youth in grades three thru six can transform imaginary ideas into posters and board games in this program meeting at the Community Education Council, 4 Erie Avenue on June 23-26 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Most likely, there are some creative scientists in the group as well. They will find Wacky Science with Kenny Vogt a great way to explore why a big ball floats and a small rock sinks. Children in grades one thru three will try to answer questions like ‘How does a volcano work?’ while they explore science from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Wacky Science Lab at South St. Marys Elementary School, June 23-26.
If your imagination would like to take you around the world, join Four Countries in Four Days with Angie Catalone and explore traditions and customs using the airplane of your mind to transport you to the different locations without ever leaving South St. Marys Elementary School. Children in grades K-3 will be departing on this adventure on June 23. Class will meet each day, through June 26, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
Registration for classes is occurring now; participants who register before June 1 will receive a free t-shirt. For more information or to schedule a creative adventure for your youngster, call Sueann Doran at 814-375-4716. The registration form may also be found on the Web site.
