Brookville Tops Golden Tide 10-0

CURWENSVILLE – Brookville high school’s baseball team earned a season split with Curwensville Thursday afternoon as the Raiders shut out the Tide 10-0 in five innings. Curwensville defeated Brookville back on April 21, 10-3.

With the loss the Golden Tide end the regular season at 14-6. That is a one game improvement for the Tide as they went 13-7 during the regular season in 2007, the first under head coach Ryan Briskar.

The Raiders took control of the game in the second inning when they put up seven runs on the board, and never were threatened. Tide starting pitcher Justin Johnston took the loss. Johnston gave up only two hits but walked four and hit two Brookville batters in his short stay on the mound. Jesse Hoover went the rest of the way in relief and also had some control problems as he walked seven.

Brookville’s Jacob Means went the distance, scattering only three Tide hits to gain the victory.

The Tide’s only hits, all singles, were by Brett McCracken, Brett Sutika and Wes McGarry.

Briskar commented about his team’s hitting after the game, saying, “We hit the ball well today. We had a lot of hard hit balls right at people, but that’s part of the game.” Then he added, “I was pleased with our bats overall, even though we have a few people being too passive at the plate and that forces us to hit when we are behind in the count. We need to become more aggressive and want to attack the ball.”

Brookville was led offensively by Greg Sobol with two hits and two RBI’s while Jacob Means and Shane Heschke stroked doubles. Means, designated hitter Jeremy Aharrah and Tyler Ferry each drove in two runs.

Briskar spoke about the Raiders performance, “Brookville hit the ball hard, but only had six hits. We just issued too many walks and hit a couple of their batters. You give that many free passes to a quality team like Brookville, you’ll find yourself in a hole fast.”

Curwensville is seeded fourth in the District Class A playoffs that begin next week. The Tide get a first round bye and will play the winner of Tuesday’s game between Elk County Catholic (ECC) and Ridgway next Thursday at Curwensville. The Tide beat Ridgway twice so far this season, 9-8 and 8-6, but lost both games to ECC 2-0 and 11-9.
